The people of Darna

Darna means home. The people who work or live here tell you themselves what that means. No stock images, no models: the people you see work here or live here.

Darna Care, The people of Darna

Osman, outreach support worker

What Osman appreciates about this work is that you visit people at home at moments when things often don't go smoothly on their own.

You see the wonderful steps forward. But also the doubts, tensions and challenges that clients face every day. That is what makes the work special!

Together with the team, Osman hopes for a colleague who speaks Arabic:

Many of our clients have an Arabic background. Sometimes you see how much difference it makes when someone can express themselves in their own language. Or when family members immediately feel understood. That builds trust. And that is often where the support begins.

“So this is where I'll be living, then.”

That's what someone said during his tour of the GroeiHuis. And he didn't make it sound like a question. More like a conclusion he was resigning himself to.

The GroeiHuis is our residential location in Apeldoorn. And it is exactly the opposite of what he was afraid of. It is a stepping stone. A place where you have a safe base while you learn what you couldn't do yet. On average, people live here for a maximum of two years. After that, they move on to independent living.

In their own words

It felt right straight away

“When I came to Darna Care, it felt right straight away. My support worker really looked at who I am and what I need. Together we took small steps that gave me more and more grip on my life. Nobody judged me, they listened instead. Now I dare to make choices and look ahead.”

I really feel at home here

“At Darna Care I really feel at home. I get the space to truly make a difference for people and to take steps together towards more independence. What I find especially beautiful is that everyone here works with genuine attention. You notice that the person really comes first, and that motivates me every single day.”

Clients and young people from the GroeiHuis are never shown in a recognisable way. We tell their story anonymously or through their support worker. Everyone who appears on camera signs a consent form beforehand and sees the edit before publication.
