GroeiHuis
A safe place to grow
Sometimes living at home is not an option (for a while). That is exactly when young people need a place where they can find peace, be themselves and work step by step on their future. The GroeiHuis of Darna Care is such a place.
In this small-scale residential location in Apeldoorn we offer 9 young people aged 15 and over a warm, safe and structured living environment. Every young person has their own room and is surrounded by support workers who are close by, think along with them and work together with the young person on growth, recovery and independence.

Who is the GroeiHuis for?
The GroeiHuis is there for young people:
- between 15 and 18 years old (with the possibility of extended youth care)
- who for various reasons cannot live at home (temporarily)
- who benefit from sheltered living in a small-scale setting
- Possibility of a crisis placement
- who need support with: daily skills (for example planning, housekeeping, finances), self-reliance, social and emotional development
We preferably focus on young people from the Apeldoorn region, so that we can work as systemically as possible with parents, carers, schools, youth protection and other network partners involved. Together we create an environment in which the young person feels carried and supported.

How Darna Care works in the GroeiHuis
In the GroeiHuis we work from the core values of Darna Care. That means we look beyond behaviour alone and truly connect with who the young person is.
Presence approach
We are close by, involved and present. Support workers are visible in the daily lives of the young people: during meals, homework, conversations and relaxation. We do not only look at what goes wrong, but above all at who the young person is, what they have been through and what is needed to move forward. Young people should feel seen, heard and taken seriously.
Competence-based approach
We focus on possibilities instead of limitations. Together we explore:
- What can you already do?
- What are you good at?
- What do you need to take the next step?
Step by step, young people practise the skills they need to live independently later on and to take part in society. Think of: daily structure, handling money, contact with others, standing up for yourself and asking for help when needed.
Equality & tailored support
With us everyone is equal as a person, but that does not mean everyone gets the same. Young people are different, and so is our support.
Some young people need more guidance, others can already do more themselves. That is not preferential treatment, but tailored support. We explain this clearly from the start and include it in the house rules.
You are here for yourself. You follow your own process. Keep your goal in mind: on the way to (more) independent living.

Daily life in the GroeiHuis
In the GroeiHuis we create a balance between structure and personal control:
- a fixed daily structure with clear agreements;
- attention for school, work, daytime activities and leisure;
- room for relaxation, humour and doing things together;
- your own room as a safe place to retreat to;
shared moments such as cooking, eating and (group) activities. This creates a homely atmosphere in which young people feel safe enough to practise, make mistakes and grow.
What makes the GroeiHuis in Apeldoorn unique?
The GroeiHuis stands out through:
- Small scale:a maximum of 9 young people, so we can truly see who lives with us.
- Individual tailored support:every pathway is personally adapted to the young person.
- Focus on independence:we work purposefully towards (more) independent living.
- Safe, stable environment:clear structure, predictability and reliable support.
- Room for personal control:young people are given more responsibility step by step.
- Close cooperation with the network:we work together with schools, parents, guardians, youth protection and others involved.
- Moving on within Darna Care:when a young person is ready, they can move on to outreach support via Darna Care.
Working with referrers and the network
We think it is important that young people are not seen "apart" from their environment. That is why we work together with referrers and the network around the young person. We coordinate, share insights where needed (within the boundaries of privacy) and look together for the best route for the young person.
Referrers often experience Darna Care as:
- accessible and easy to reach
- quick to act, also in complex cases
- clear communication about possibilities, boundaries and expectations
